Edgar Sales

Edgar Escalona Sales, 47, of Pahala, died Feb. 4, 2016, at Hilo Medical Center. Born March 28, 1968, in Santiago, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, he was a macadamia nut sorter in Pahala and member of the Pahala Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Friends may call 8 a.m. April 2 at Pahala Holy Rosary Catholic Church for a 10 a.m. Mass. Casual attire is requested and no flowers. Friends may also call April 23 at the Saint James the Greater Parish in Santiago, Ilocos Sur, Philippines, for a Mass followed by committal service.

He is survived by wife, Grace E. Sales, of Pahala; sisters, Helen (Ruben) Tugade, of Pahala and Roschelle Sales, of Philippines; parents, Bonifacio (Wilfreda) Echalas, Sr. of Philippines; numerous nieces and a nephew.

Karen Fujiyama

Karen Hiromi Fujiyama, 69, of Hilo, died March 28, 2016 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Aug. 3, 1946, in Honolulu, she was a retired from the state unemployment insurance supervisor.

Friends may call 4 p.m. April 6 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel for a 5 p.m. service. Cremation will follow. Casual attire is requested. No flowers.

She is survived by husband, Donald Fujiyama, of Hilo; sons, Don Fujiyama, of Honolulu, and Jason (Heidi Medeiros) Fujiyama, of Hilo; daughters, Pomai (Joe) Valente, of Hilo, and Kewelina (Glenn) Martin, of Washington; brother, Nelson (Karen) Nakasone, of Hilo; sister, Pauline (Bill) Matsuda, of Kaneohe, Oahu; six grandchildren; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Kenneth Kekela Jr.

Kenneth Kalaulu Kekela Jr., 63, of Papaikou died March 14, 2016, at home. Born Oct. 28, 1952, in Hilo, he was a member of Big Island Independent Bikers m/c, a worker of C.W maintenance, Yoshina Construction, Alika Cooper fish and Co., Toledo Enterprise, Waldron feedlot and Marrott.

Services were held.

He is survived by father, Kenneth Kekela Sr. of Keaau; brothers, Paul (Alicia) Kekela of Hilo, Karl Kekela Sr. of Keaau and Michael (Rhonda) Kekela of Utah; sisters, Debra (Leonard) Luiz of Papaikou, Julie (Allan) Kainoa of Keaau and Sharon Kekela of Papaikou; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Takeo Miyasaki

Takeo Miyasaki, 83, of Hilo died Feb. 22, 2016, at the Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired laboratory technician for the former Brewer Environmental Service and a member of the Taishoji Soto Mission.

Private services held. Family requests no flowers and no monetary gifts.

He is survived by wife, Toshie Miyasaki of Hilo; son, Keith Miyasaki of Hilo; daughters, Deborah (Michael) Chang of Hilo, Sandra Miyasaki of Honolulu; sisters, Karen (Geoffrey) Chow of Whittier, Calif., Kimie (Ed) Murakami of Honolulu, Irene Gardner of California; two grandsons, numerous nieces and nephews.

Theresa Spangler

Theresa Marie Spangler, 94, of Waikoloa, died March, 2016, 9 at Regency at Hualalai. Born Sept. 9, 1921, in Lawrence, Mass., she was a homemaker, member of Second Presbyterian Church in Baltimore and Waikoloa Community Church.

Service will be announced at a later date. Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice of Kona, P.O. Box 4130, Kailua-Kona, HI 96745.

She is survived by sons, Robert (Jane) Spangler II of St. John, Ind., Donald (Diane) Spangler of Keaau; daughter, Kristine (Bruce) Harrison of Waikoloa; five grandchildren, two great-grandsons, numerous nieces and nephews.

Mitsue Unebasami

Mitsue Unebasami, 95, of Hilo died March 8, 2016, at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama Care Center. Born Sept. 11, 1920, in Kealakekua, she was retired from the former Moya’s Lunch Shop in Wainaku, had also worked at the former Kamehameha Garment Co. in Hilo and was a member of Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

She is survived by sons, Earl Unebasami of Hilo, Ray (Sharon) Unebasami of Honolulu; two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
